With the snow-capped Cascade Mountain as a backdrop, the historic city of Bend is located on the edge of the scenic Deschutes River. Originally a logging town, Bend is a city of contrasts, full of historic buildings and trendy 5-star restaurants, cool little boutiques and book stores, and tons of beer pubs and breweries. Oh, and there’s a dormant volcano right in a town called Pilot Butte too. If you get tired of golfing, skiing, or hiking (as if that will happen), just head to downtown Bend. A hike up to the top of Pilot Butte offers a little exercise along with panoramic views of the down and surrounding Cascades. And the Butte comes in handy as a nice directional device – you’ll never get lost!

While it’s not well known for its golf courses, Bend actually has quite a few courses that have made Golf Digest lists of the best courses to play over the years. No matter which courses you play, all have the beautiful scenery and mountain views that make Bend special. Each course offers players a little something different, but all are great for all experience levels. The Par-72 River’s Edge Golf Course is open year-round, and its 6th hole has an elevated green (with a 25-foot waterfall just for fun). And the gorgeous Pronghorn has two great courses. Both the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course and the Tom Fazio Course take full advantage of the natural landscape incorporating lava rock ridges and outcroppings, and the 8th hole of Fazio has a 45-foot canyon and exposed lava tube. Tetherow is another top-rated course with a layout designed by David McLay Kidd where golfers can enjoy spectacular views of the Broken Top and Three Sisters while playing. Sunriver Resort has two public courses as well as two private courses. Meadows, one of the public courses, was designed by John Fought, and seven of its eighteen holes run alongside the lovely Sun River. Woodlands, the second public course, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. around lava outcroppings, ponderosa pines, and plenty of water hazards.
