Every family has its own holiday traditions, and Thanksgiving usually means gathering the family together for the annual feast of turkey, stuffing, sweet potato soufflé, pumpkin pie and all of the other favorites that are enjoyed year after year. But why not do something new this year? Start a new tradition? If your family isn’t quite ready to give up the whole turkey, stuffing and pie thing, that’s ok. Maybe this is the time to just take the first step – just make a change in venue. Why not have your Thanksgiving in Bend, with the majestic Cascade Mountains everywhere you look? This Thanksgiving will be one to remember.

Enjoy Fall Activities
Fall in Bend means warm days perfect for hiking, biking, maybe a little skiing if the snow is early, and cool nights made for snuggling in front of roaring fireplaces. Sometimes fall can mean a little unpredictability in the weather, but that just adds to the fun. Ski one day, hike the same mountain trails the next. And the colors! When the trees on the mountains turn, the entire world seems like it’s on fire, filled with brilliant burgundy and bronze, glorious golds and amber, and riotous reds.
This is the time for hiking and biking along forested mountain trails, up to cascading waterfalls and breathtaking views. Waterfall and fall color enthusiasts should make the hikes to popular Tumalo Falls and Paulina Plunge. And best of all, fall foliage enthusiasts don’t even have to leave Bend to see gorgeous fall colors. Head to one of Bend’s many parks, or take a hike along the Deschutes River Trail. The trail runs alongside the river, over footbridges, through downtown Bend and wide canyons and prairies, and through groves of beautiful Aspen trees, red osier dogwood, and choke cherry bursting with color. This popular multi-use trail is great for wildlife and bird watching too. A hike up Pilot Butte (right in the center of town) will give you a wonderful, panoramic view of the mountains and valleys surrounding Bend as they explode in color. A nice, exhilarating hike before stuffing yourself with turkey and pie is a good thing.
Enjoy Fall Flavors
Of course it wouldn’t be fall or Thanksgiving without pumpkin spice something. Enjoy your favorite fall-themed beverage as you wander through the Old Mill District or downtown Bend. It’s not too early to get started on holiday shopping! Of course, by the end of the day, you may need something a little stronger than the usual pumpkin spice latte, so pick a few pubs from the Bend Ale Trail and try their seasonal offerings. Some of our favorites are Big Ol’ Pumpkin from 10 Barrel, the Twisted Gourd Pumpkin Ale at Silver Moon, Jubelale Festive Winter Ale from the Deschutes Brewery, Salted Caramel Porter from the Cascade Lakes Brewing Co., and the pumpkin Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo from RiverBend Brewery. That should get you started!
