Todd Lake Loop Trail

HomeBend Hiking TrailsTodd Lake Loop Trail

We love to hike in Bend, and it’s apparent by the sheer variety of trails you can find throughout the region. From easy half-mile hikes to the toughest hikes that take you up the peaks of the mountains that make our town so special, the views are all spectacular and completely different from each other. The Todd Lake Loop Trail, located near Sunriver, is another local favorite, but as it is not well known, so you may not run into too many people as you hike it.

Weather Matters

The Bend and Sunriver areas get a lot of snow in the winter, and when hiking the Todd Lake Loop Trail, it’s important to pay attention to the weather. Only safely accessible from June through to October, late season storms in the summer and early season storms in the winter can make the trek hazardous. For the rest of the time, however, this trail is great for hikers of all experience levels. It will cost you $5 to park, but the price is well worth the views!

Muddy during rainy times, wear the shoes you don’t care as much about and the hike around the lake will end up being the highlight of your vacation! Dogs on leashes are permitted on the Todd Lake Loop Trail, allowing your fur baby to have an adventure as well! Birding is a popular activity on this trail, and you can download birdwatching apps on your phone to keep track of the ones you see along the way.

Our favorite part of this hike are the views of Todd Lake. Featuring serene waters most of the time, when the wind is blowing, the waves pick up and the placid smoothness erupts into an angry fury of waves and white water. Photographs taken at those times will be hauntingly beautiful, especially when a chrome filter is used. The wildlife that make their home around the Todd Lake Loop Trail often make an appearance, so be sure to keep your camera handy; the wildflowers that grow here are also photo worthy. During the hottest days of summer, a quick dip in the lake is always a fun idea, and a picnic after can give you time to dry off before you continue on your journey.
