When you’re trying to stick to a budget while planning a vacation, it can seem impossible to find anything to do that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Fortunately, Bend has a surprising number of options year-round for attractions and activities that are free or inexpensive to experience.
If you happen to be staying with us during the winter, you can take advantage of our Kids Ski Free package through Mt. Bachelor and go on a low-cost skiing session at the most popular ski resort in Bend. On Mt. Bachelor, you can also enjoy sledding, snowshoeing, and even sled dog rides. If you’re looking for something a little different, try your hand at mountain biking in the winter terrain. Another great option: hiking up to Horse Ridge on the Oregon Desert Trail for incredible views of the Cascade Mountains.
Throughout the summer, you can immerse yourself in the jaw-dropping beauty of Bend’s best hiking trails, such as Pilot Butte. Floating on the Deschutes River is another popular summertime activity that costs very little; if you already have a durable innertube and lifejacket for each person, then you’re all set! If you don’t have these items, you can buy them at local stores like Les Schwab, then use them as often as you want during your trip.
Biking in Bend and More
If you’re bringing your bike with you on vacation, there are a ton of great trails for mountain biking and road cycling. You can ride around downtown, or head out onto the Deschutes River Trail (which requires a mere $5.00 day pass), or free trails like Swampy Lakes Loop and Phil’s Trail. You can also go on the Heritage Walk downtown and visit all of the historic buildings if you want to explore in town, or go caving at the cool Lava River Cave (literally; it stays between 40 to 50 degrees throughout the summer) for $5.00. Just makes sure to bring a jacket and your own light, unless you don’t mind spending an extra $5.00 for a lantern when you get there.
For fun at night, visit the Pine Mountain Observatory for a mere $3.00 optional donation. And throughout the day, you can go on the Deschutes Brewery Tour and sample beer for free, go geocaching (Bend is a popular area for the fun scavenger hunt-style activity), or see a movie for only $4.00 at McMenamins Theater at the Old St. Francis School.
